There are numerous smaller enhancements in StoneGate Management Center 5.2. Here are some of those improvements that you may find interesting.
There is a nice new shortcut in SMC 5.2 that lets you to convert old policy snapshot as new policy in the SMC. Just right-click any policy snapshot element and select Tools > Restore… The system then imports the snapshot as a new policy element to SMC. This is a nice backup feature if you face the need to revert back to previous policy version.
In SMC 5.2, you can also restore individual element’s old version to your current SMC. Just open some old policy snapshot, right-click the element and select “Restore” from the menu that opens.
Both these restore actions launch Import process in which you still have the possibility to review the changes and change the import action (Import/Do Not Import/Rename). See more details about Import Enhancements in SMC 5.2 in here.
This picture visualizes lots of small enhancements made related to policy editing:
StoneGate Web Portal contains a couple of nice enhancements too. Now all the views are implemented as HTML. In other words, also Reports and Log Details can be viewed in HTML instead of PDF format. The PDF is still there as an additional option if you prefer that format for example for printing purposes.
In many environments Network Address Translation (NAT) seems to be very extensively used. That has resulted in hundreds or even thousands of NAT rules in Firewall Policies. To help managing all these NAT rules, we have now introduce two nice features that you may have already used in Access Rules side.
| Administrators can now limit the number of connections to a service per source and/or destination IP. This limit is configured in FW Access Rules. Just select Permit as action, open the Action Options dialog and use these new settings there: |
The limits are valid per Source or Destination address. So if there are multiple Source or Destination addresses used in the policy, the limit applies to all of them separately. As you can see from the snapshot above, you can limit the connections by source and destination simultaneously.
Log browsing and filtering is one of the most frequent administrators’ tasks. That’s why we continuosly try to improve the workflows related to logs. In SMC 5.2 there are a few nice shortcuts that you can utilize when filtering the logs:
In StoneGate Management Center 5.2 the VPN troubleshooting tools have improved significantly. There are a lot of new drill-in actions available in System Status view. You can for example right-click any VPN tunnel in the VPN diagrams and drill-in to logs that flow through the selected tunnel. You can also right-click individual Gateways or Endpoints (from the Info panel) and drill-in to the related logs.
StoneGate Firewall 5.2 supports now multicast routing through IGMP proxy. This new configuration option enables the most useful method to support “dynamic” multicast routing (defined in RFC 4605). Multicast Routing is now configured from the dialog that can be launced from the Interfaces tab in Firewall properties. Please note that IGMP proxy and Static Multicast Routing can not be used simultaneously.
StoneGate Management Center 5.2 introduce a new Appliance Status diagrams that enable you to have a virtual look at the appliance in the machine room. From the graphical visualization of the appliance, you can see the status of ports, type of ports (copper vs. fibre) as well as some additional information like if 3G modem interfaces are used in your FW or if your IPS appliance’s ports are currently in bypass mode.
